March Update 2020

Ministry Journal No Comments

Hope You’re Doing Well!

What a crazy time. We at Heartfelt Music® hope you are doing well amidst this COVID19 pandemic. I was helping stream services at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, but now feel the necessity do something from home. Would you be interested in me streaming a music worship time some evening through Facebook Live? So many musicians are offering this as an option. Email me and let me know what you think would be encouraging for you. Since Heartfelt Music® has a streaming license, I can sing through some current songs and you can sing along at home.

March has been a fulfilling month with the BASS Conference (before the Shelter-in-Place order), performing two live concerts (Gilroy and Los Altos), and learning to teach through Zoom online. Quite a few changes, but we’re doing well.

Reggie’s Concert

I sure enjoyed the two live concerts at Gilroy Presbyterian Church and Bridges Community Church in Los Altos. This was before the Shelter-in-Place order was in place.

BASS Convention

I had over 75 enthusiastic people for my vocal workshop at the BASS Convention and around 30 for the guitar workshop. Over 1,000 attended the convention!

Zoom Lessons

I’m teaching classes with Valley Christian School through Zoom, which is surprisingly going very well. I’m also teaching private lessons through Zoom and have about 10 students.

This is the season to celebrate what followers of Jesus enjoy everyday: The resurrected presence of Christ. May this Easter be filled with fun family times and rich reflection on the resurrection.

BASS Convention 2019

The BASS Convention

March 9, I led 2 training sessions for the BASS Convention. The training workshops I taught were Dynamic Guitar in Worship (both acoustic and electric), and Dynamic Bass Guitar in Worship (both acoustic and electric). The sessions were hands-on, so people brought your instrument! There were three general sessions and over 300 workshops for everyone involved in ministry at churches, both professionally and voluntarily.

National Worship Leader Conference

Worship leaders, musicians, songwriters, movers and shakers, theologians and scholars, all connected at the National Worship Leader Conference in Nashville, TN, May 20-21. This will be the fourth year I’ll be leading workshops for NWLC. I’ll be teaching on How to Record Your Own Music (ProTools), How to Write Out Your Music (Sibelius), and How to Read Music (MusicTheory.net). If you would like to come, you can come as my friend and use my 25% discount code: FRIENDS25.

January Ministry Update

Ministry Journal, Upcoming Events No Comments

Still Ministering!

At the beginning of this new year, I’ve been contemplating what has remained true throughout my adult life and the 34 years of Heartfelt Music. The word that comes to mind is ministry. It’s tempting to see concerts, albums, and training events to be primarily about fame. I’ve seen many artists push hard to get their name out above others and base their important decisions on how much money will come in. A part of the entertainment business requires artists to think about these things, but it could be a slippery slope, especially when character and integrity are treated as less important. I’m very glad that over the years, Heartfelt Music has been an organization committed to ministry and not fame. We’ve emphasized people, relationships, encouraging others toward right living and a strong faith in Christ. The name of Jesus matters more than my name and mentoring others is so fulfilling. I’ll be doing more concerts in the next few months and will be promoting other artists’ concerts as well. All of this is for ministry, positively influencing and encouraging all those who come. Thank you for your help and prayers to keep me focused toward ministry, maintaining the priorities that make eternal differences.

Gilroy Concert

There will be a Praise Night with me and the worship band at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave, Gilroy, CA 95020, this Sunday, January 28, at 6:30pm. This is the first of three monthly Sunday Evening Worship Series. I will be leading, with the GPC worship team, popular worship songs. David Talbott will be leading a hymn sing Sunday, February 25, to recall the greatness of God through song. Then, Sunday, March 18, I will be doing a full concert with lots of guitar and vocal tapestry.

Valley Christian School Concert

There will be a staff concert on Tuesday, March 6, where some of the faculty of Valley Christian Schools in San Jose will perform in the Conservatory Concert Hall. I’ll be one of the performers this evening with both voice and guitar. Some of my amazing cohorts will sing, play saxophone, piano, and other instruments to demonstrate the wonderful talent represented at VCS. It’s open to the public, students, and faculty. It begins at 7:00pm.

Mount Hermon Concert

In the beautiful Santa Cruz Redwoods, there will be a Summer Concert Series with artists such as Phil Keaggy and Point of Grace. I will be performing in concert with Elizabeth Hunnicutt Summers on Saturday, August 4, at 7:30. Elizabeth will do a 20 minute concert, I’ll do a 20 minute concert, then together we’ll lead everyone in familiar worship songs. Concerts are free, but you can enjoy a buffet dinner right before the concert for $25.00.

BASS ConventionMount Hermon Christian Camps

Empowering People

This weekend, March 3-5, I’m leading worship with Peter Neumann for the BASS Convention at Redwood Chapel in Castro Valley. I’ll be equipping others through teaching workshops throughout the weekend. There is a theme in all that I am doing right now through Heartfelt Music: Empowering others to be more effective. Whether it is in playing guitar, singing, songwriting, recording, leading music, or simply worshiping the living God, infusing others with confidence and skill enables them to reach their God-given potential. I’m teaching at Valley Christian School, working on a Masters Degree through Full Sail University, giving private guitar lessons, helping with the Mount Hermon Community, and leading worship every Sunday at various churches. Thank you for your continued prayers and encouragement. Pray that God would empower me to empower others in making significant changes our world, which desperately needs God’s touch.

July Happenings & Update

The Art of Worship Sibelius Training National Worship Leader Conference

The Art of Worship

There are many aspects to worship (or “worth-ship”), but giving worth to God is the main thrust. The reality of worship takes place in the heart as we are loving, adoring, honoring, valuing, and giving worth to God. It’s all about relationship and being intimate with Him. However, though the reality of worship takes place inside us, it’s only appropriate for there to be some outward expression of worship. These outward expressions are symbols we use to communicate to God how valuable He is to us. We can close our eyes, bow our heads, singing lyrics, raise our hands, shout praise, design lighting, get on our knees, write a poem, and even engineer sound. All these are considered the “Art of Worship.” Some things are spontaneous and some are well thought out, but they reveal what’s going on in our hearts. May you get creative in expressing your heart to God in artistic ways. Remember, it’s not about trying to impress God. It’s about pleasing and honoring God in all we do, matching our inner attitude of worship with our physical demonstration of that worship.
.
We greatly appreciate your continued prayers and encouraging notes each month. This spurs us on to stay focused on using music, leadership, and training to effectively help others reach their potential. I hope you are having a wonderful summer!

.

Worship Leading Opportunities throughout July

I’ll be regularly ministering with San Jose Christian Reformed Church as their Interim Worship Leader for the next several months. They are looking for a full-time worship leader, so I’m there to help. I’ll be coming alongside other churches here and there as well. On July 26, I’ll be at Community Presbyterian Church leading worship in their Sanctuary services. That same evening, I’ll be leading worship for Cityteam in San Jose. We’ve put together a power band to lift our praise to God. We also played with them last month.

.

Sibelius Training for Certification

I’ll be receiving Certification Training mid-July for Sibelius music software at The Commercial Music Lab, Gavilan Hills Estates, near Los Angeles. I’ll be training students at Valley Christian High School how to write music on the computer using Sibelius. They will also become certified. Also, it’s about time I wrote out some of my songs as well. Just today, I was teaching one of my students my song Flame. Both of us wished it was fully written out in music notation and guitar tab. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write out a bunch.

.

March Ministry Update

Keep Learning!

It is so important to keep learning and never too late to go for more education. Earning a BA and Teaching Credential in Music has been such an advantage for me in performing and training others. To go a step further, I will be pursuing a Masters Degree in the coming months (more below). Next month, Phil Keaggy is coming to San Jose and tickets are now on sale for Tuesday, April 14, at 7:00 (more below). The BASS Convention was a huge success last weekend (more below). Thank you for your continued prayers and care for Heartfelt Music Ministry.

Bay Area Church Workers Conference

It was a joy to be involved with the BASS Convention last week (the Bay Area Sunday School convention is training for church workers who volunteer their time in every area of church ministry). I am on the board and organize the workshops for the Worship, Music & Drama section. Peter Neumann was our Keynote for this section and did an outstanding job. I taught two workshops, Dynamic Guitar in Worship and Worship Organization with the iPad.

Masters Degree in Entertainment Business

I am very excited to continue my education in the field of Entertainment Business. Full Sail University has a wonderful 12-month program that will not only give me the most current and relevant education in Entertainment Business, but also land me a Masters Degree in the process. More than 30 years ago, Full Sail began as a dream to create a place where people could learn how to take their passion for entertainment and turn it into a career they love. This will help me in developing a new Contemporary Artist Program at Valley Christian School and give Heartfelt Music a cutting edge in equipping others for ministry.

Phil Keaggy Is Coming to San Jose April 14

Phil Keaggy is coming to Valley Christian School for a concert Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 7:00pm. It’s open to everyone! Tickets are on sale through Vendini (CLICK HERE). Phil is one of the best guitar players in the world. Having someone of Phil’s skill level, genuine humility, and deep faith will inspire you and remind all who attend of God’s creative artistic beauty (watch his “True Believers” video). Heartfelt Music is joining with VCS to have Phil Keaggy share his passion in music and Christian faith. The concert is limited to 300 people, so don’t wait to get your tickets ($25 adults, $15 students). Tell a friend!

WorshipConsulting PhilKeaggyConcert VCSWorshipTeam

A Good Start for 2015!

We are over a month into the new year and off to a good start. January marked the restart of private lessons (20 students), ministry with Valley Christian Schools (click here to hear a remarkable song by the worship team), worship consulting with Trinity Presbyterian Church, and worship leading with Mariner’s Discovery Church (leading again this month). February continues to hold opportunities for Heartfelt Music to equip others and encourage in Christ.

In looking ahead, Phil Keaggy is coming to San Jose and tickets are now on sale for Tuesday, April 14, at 7:00 (more info below).

I appreciate your prayers in ministry and personally. I am exploring getting a Master’s Degree in Entertainment Business to help at Valley Christian Schools and Heartfelt Music Ministry. Also, as President of the Mount Hermon Community, we hope the new Executive Director of Mount Hermon Conference Center is a perfect fit for the camps and the community. Their final decision on this person is going to happen more sooner than later. It is so important to get a strong Christian and experienced leader in this position. Please, pray for these things.

Worship Consultation

It has been a joy working with the worship team at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Campbell! With two services and multiple teams, they have a wide offering of music styles and sounds. Worship consulting is tailored and designed to develop the skill of the musicians and leaders, enhance the corporate singing of the church, expand understanding of group worship dynamics, motivate a lifestyle of intimate worship, inspire confidence and expression, and build “team” unity with good communication. The musicians play together while I make observations to apply the methods discussed earlier. I can come to your church in order to work alongside you, your musicians and enhance your ministry.

Phil Keaggy Is Coming to San Jose April 14

Valley Christian School is bringing Phil Keaggy in for a concert Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 7:00pm. It’s open to everyone! Tickets are on sale through Vendini (CLICK HERE). Worship at Valley Christian High School

The worship team at Valley Christian High School is doing some outstanding ministry! The two High School bands have led the 1,400 students in worship during chapels every week. It’s been a delight to work with them, learn new songs, and see significant spiritual growth in the lives of the student body. You can hear and see a song they performed last week called Something New by the group For All Seasons on YouTube [CLICK HERE to view]. We just had our Spiritual Emphasis Week with Josh Riebock. His style of storytelling and being authentic was perfect to encourage the students and faculty all week.

Lead Like Jesus

The way Jesus led his disciples and influenced others throughout his life is the best example for us in leading today! The principles He demonstrated were powerful and relevant. A month ago, Scott Farmer, the pastor from Community Presbyterian Church, taught on Leading Like Jesus which really captured my attention. I learned Lead Like Jesus is a book by Ken Blanchard which is also available as a CD audiobook, so I picked one up from Amazon.com and just finished it. Rick Warren and Bill Hybels helped host it. The concepts of being a servant leader and using Jesus as our prime example of how to lead has been so encouraging. Look to Jesus as you follow Him and lead others!

BASS Conference Reflection

The BASS Church Workers Conference was a huge success. I held three workshops on Friday, Creative Songwriting, Worship Infusion, and Dynamic Guitar in Worship at Redwood Chapel Community Church in Castro Valley. On Saturday, I led a special workshop with one of the Valley Christian High School Worship Teams called Worship Band Interactive at First Baptist Church of Castro Valley. We had a great response with a lot of interaction and participation! Click on the picture above or HERE to see our opening song It Is Good.

March Ministry Update

The Santa Cruz lighthouse, pictured here last weekend with beautiful weather, is a superb example of what I want myself and Heartfelt Music to be: A guiding light to all we encounter! Besides The BASS Conference and guitar lessons, there’s been a ton of significant ministry happening at Valley Christian School. We just had the Visual and Performing Arts assembly which highlighted the Conservatory of the Arts there. It represented Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz, Strings Ensemble, Ceramics, Photography, Art, and more. Teaching 3 Worship Teams, the Music Technology class, and the Intro to Guitar and Electric Bass class has been so fulfilling.

Exciting Guitar Lessons

I just added two new guitar students (welcome Kenna in Los Altos and Josiah in Mount Hermon). This makes 27 guitar students. Some have lessons every week, some have lessons every other week, and some have lessons once a month.  Each lesson is tailored to each individual to get them excited about guitar in the timing and schedule they can handle. There are more openings in Los Altos and Mount Hermon if you know someone who wants to learn guitar.

Coming Events

April 12 & 13  Helping lead music and worship with Community Presbyterian Church in Danville for their Video Cafe, Palm Sunday. More events on the Heartfelt Music Calendar
