Private Coaching/Lessons Introduction

I am currently holding private lessons on Thursdays in the afternoon at Valley Christian School in San Jose and Bridges Community Church in Los Altos. Each lesson is tailored to you specifically! Whether you want to learn guitar, voice, music theory, songwriting, worship leading, bass guitar, concert artistry, or any combination, you will have fun and be challenged.  Lessons can be weekly, bi-weekly, or once a month and can be used to enhance other lessons you may be taking. You can even create a small group lesson if you get some friends at the same level, though most people respond best to individualized intensive mentoring-style private coaching/lessons.

.

Each student receives digital handouts for songs, charts, techniques, and more.  Each lesson is filled with personal intensive education following your goals and specific interests.  A Lesson Summary Video is recorded at the end of each lesson for you to view on YouTube.com (usually within 24 hours) so you can have audio and visual examples to remember the assignment.  You will receive a Private Assignment Page (which is password protected) for details of what you are to practice and what was covered during the lesson.  I am available through email, phone, text, Zoom, Facebook, Facetime, or Skype to answer questions you may have.

.

It is expected that each student take this commitment seriously and dedicate adequate practice time to fully benefit from each lesson. Each student is expected to demonstrate initiative, motivation, and a sense of purpose. Come with questions and seek to be challenged. If you cannot make a lesson, please communicate as soon as possible (email or call 925-206-9895).  If there is no communication before the lesson, you will be asked to pay for 15 minutes in having me wait ($25.00).

.

I do teach lessons to all ages and tailor each one to the needs, goals, and learning styles of the student. I make the lessons very fun and encouraging. For beginners, group lessons are both economical and a great way to start. I teach group lessons and courses for this reason. But most students learn best with private lessons. What makes my lessons a cut above others is the combination of:

.

– Understanding where a student is in their skill level and taking them to the next level with relevant technique and appropriate materials. I listen and empathize with the students.

– Motivating students through demonstration, online samples, digital music, and other resources.

– We go through excellent resource books (The Complete Guitar Manual – see the bottom of the products page at https://heartfeltmusic.org/products/)

– There is a lot of communication and a Private Assignment Page on my web site where I list the assignment and give private messages.

– Making a video of the last two minutes of each session so the student can download it and see my instruction throughout the week.

.

The cost for private lessons are $50.00 for 30 minutes, $75.00 for 45 minutes, $100.00 for 60 minutes, and $125 for 75 minutes.  If 2-4 students would like to take at the same time, the cost would be the same for the time and each student splits the cost (the resource book is extra).

Reviews

Here are some reviews from my students:

.

“I have been Reggie’s student for about 18 months. I had been playing guitar for years but I had hit a plateau in my growth. A friend of mine handed me one of Reggie’s CD’s, and I decided to take lessons. I wanted to learn more right-hand techniques and chord voicings so I could play improvisationally and apply them in songwriting. Having Reggie as a teacher has helped me make the most out of a limited amount of practice time.  Reggie’s enthusiasm for teaching guitar has been constant long after my first impressions. Each lesson, after a robust greeting, we begin by reviewing a bit of my progress from last time. Often I’ve told him in advance where I’ve been struggling or what I’d like to learn next, so he has come well-equipped with handouts that aid in retention. He even sends me a downloadable video summary of each lesson so I can refer back to it weeks later. Reggie has taught at the collegiate level, but his teaching doesn’t get bogged down in theory. Instead he tailors lessons that move students toward the goals they’ve set, and fills in precepts of theory as they seem relevant. Reggie is a very skilled guitarist, an enthusiastic coach, and a businessman who structures things so they are very user-friendly. And his walk in Christ adds a dimension of fellowship to each class!  My wife says she has never seen me move around the fingerboard so much. And I feel more excited and confident in my playing than I’ve ever felt in my life.”

“My son has been learning how to play the guitar from Reggie for the past 3 years.  Reggie has taught him a various range of music.  He is an amazing teacher with a lot of energy, enthusiasm and love for music and the guitar.  His knowledge is vast.  He is so good with kids.  My son loves Reggie and waits for his class.  Thank you Reggie for all your hard work and helping him to improve his skill.

“Reggie is an outstanding guitar instructor!  His own guitar skills are impressive, of course, but his teaching ability has such depth.  He excels in being able to communicate clearly by breaking complex skills into manageable segments to bring about progress.  He not only takes my music preferences and goals into account, but also challenges me to strive for more than I think I can achieve.  His passion for playing guitar, especially for leading in worship, is contagious, and spurs me on musically.  Reggie is an exceptional guitar instructor!

“Reggie is a really awesome guitar teacher!  I enjoy every lesson with him and I am also improving after each lesson.  He is not only a great teacher, but also a loving brother in Christ!”

“Mr. Coates is teaching me guitar at an easy yet educated level.  I learn at least one song a week with techniques like hammer-ons, pull-offs, and sliding.  I know so many chords that he taught me at a level that was right for me.”

“Reggie is very thorough, caring, and does a great job customizing each lesson to your pace and skill level.  He is very intuitive, skilled and encouraging, while at the same time being supportive, understanding and low-pressure.  He also is great at introducing you to new pieces and exercises according to your tastes and skill level.”
