Jesus Has Risen!

I hope you have been enjoying the build-up to tomorrow’s celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Join me at the Mount Hermon Conference Center’s Victory Circle at 6:30am for their Sunrise Service (our usual gathering at the Ponderosa Lodge Cross is closed for reconstruction). This week has been a reflection on what drove Jesus to the cross, our seperation from God. We need a Savior. I led worship for a gathering of four churches last night in Santa Clara during Good Friday and it was sobering to share communion as Jesus did before he went to the cross. “Remember me, my life given for you, and the New Covenant of my life in you.” On Easter, Jesus conquered death and, not only completely forgave us of our sin, but empowers us to live in His resurrection victory. May you experience His life in you today and everyday!

The ministry momentum for Heartfelt Music Ministry is creating an astounding influence in keeping with our Mission Statement: Leading others toward intimacy with God and excellence in artistry. We have just selected the worship team for next year at Valley Christian Schools in San Jose. What a joy to train these students to encourage 2300 students in worship during chapels. This winter and spring, I have been training musicians and leading worship for San Jose Christian Reformed Church and San Ramon Presbyterian Church. I’m continuing to mentor through private lessons in-person and through Zoom. I’ve been preparing and producing the Mount Hermon Summer Concert Series, which is shaping up to be an inspiration for those who attend. We’ll have seven concerts this summer. Family Time

I was able to spend a few day in Oregon visiting my son, daughter-in-law, and grand-daughter a couple of weeks ago. It was fun being together amidst the combination of snow, rain, and sunny days. They are so precious. I was able to be a handyman for a few days.

Singing to My Grand-Daughter

In September, Sherri and I visited our grand-daughter in Oregon as we helped my son and his wife move. It was so fun to sing to her the song I wrote for her using my son’s guitar. It’s called You Pick Me Up. The song will be on the Encore album.

Visiting Our Granddaughter

It was so fun for Sherri and I to see our 5 month old granddaughter! We drove up to Dayton, Oregon, and spent a week visiting my youngest son and his wife. How sweet it is to hold and cuddle their precious daughter. We love being first-time grandparents!

Christmas Carol Sing Video

Merry Christmas! It’s the season to focus on the birth of Christ and celebrate God’s deep love for us with family and friends. One meaningful way to relive the coming of Jesus is through Christmas carols. “This, this is Christ the King…” Join me Sunday, December 12, at 5:00pm for a half hour of singing Christmas carols and meaningful songs. It’s a prerecorded video on my YouTube channel. I’ll be there to chat with you if you’d like to make a comment. New Summer Music

I’m working on the new Instrumental Guitar – Vol. 2 album and very excited about how it’s coming along. I’ve finished recording all ten songs and now mixing and mastering them. It’s a fun process, but it does take a lot of time. The new target date is mid-June to have it available.

Next week is the last week of the year for Valley Christian Schools. It’s been a crazy ride this year because of the pandemic, but the students and faculty weathered through it pretty well. Our worship team has one more performance this Thursday for the baccalaureate.

My oldest son and his wife will be visiting in person with us this weekend for the first time in months because of the pandemic. Also, my youngest son and his wife will be visiting with us in a few weeks for the first time in months as well. Sherri and I are so thankful for family and really look forward to finally getting together.

This summer, I’m organizing the live 2021 Summer Concerts at Mount Hermon with Phil Keaggy, Phillips Craig & Dean, Point of Grace, Veritas, Nichole Nordeman, Steve Green and Dick Tunney, and Buddy Greene & Jeff Taylor. The series is called Worship in the Redwoods and is totally free. You will need to have a ticket because he seating is limited, but the tickets are free through iTickets and there is seating inside the auditorium and outside (you’ll have to specify which one you’d like).

I’ll be teaching summer private lessons through Zoom on Thursday afternoons beginning June 10th and there are a few openings if you’re interested. Do you need a boost in your music endeavors? Instrumental Guitar – Vol. II Coming Album

This is my eighteenth album and it’s almost ready for distribution! It has such an interesting musical variety (easy rock, bluegrass, bossa nova, classical, light jazz). It’s primarily done with my Taylor 815CE acoustic guitar, but I also use an electric and nylon stringed guitars. There’s a story behind each of the songs and I’ll be giving more detail about all that in June.

Worship in the Redwoods at Mount Hermon

Two hours of encouraging music with some of your favorite Christian artists! Concert attendees can be with the artists inside with the artists or relax on the mezzanine patio and take in the night with beautiful music. Each program is free, but requires registration. Getting Family Time This Summer

Sherri and I are excited to get together with our two sons and their wives after months of being careful about COVID19. All of us are feeling safer and the pandemic seems to be going in the right direction. We are looking forward to eating out, visiting local state parks, walking along the beach, and playing games in person.

Life Can Get So Complicated

So much has happened in the last couple of months. We had to evacuate Mount Hermon for ten days because of the fires. That was very scary thinking our home would go up in flames. Fortunately, the fires didn’t reach us and we are overflowing with thankfulness. Valley Christian School started back up in August and the teachers have been ordered to go back to the campus still teaching remotely and having a few students attend “live.” Fortunately, there are many COVID19 precautions set up for both the teachers and the students. I just enjoy teaching, whether online or in person. My sister had some health issues which took almost a month to sort out, but she is better now. I’ve had two extremely difficult interactions with close friends lately that really threw me for a loop. All this to say life can get so complicated! What gives me an absolutely hopeful perspective is knowing that the main character in this story is Jesus Himself. He knows the emotional uncertainty we felt with our home, the pandemic, family health, and friends. He cares about it all. It’s not complicated for Him. I can trust through it all and know He will work it out for good (Romans 8:28)! Thank you for your prayers and support through these changing times. I’m praying for you as well.

We just did some reorganizing of the Heartfelt Music Ministry Officers and Board of Directors and have added Lindsey Coates as the new Secretary. Also, after six months of financially doing pretty well, Heartfelt Music is experiencing some crunch and could use some help. See below for more details.

As the Concert Coordinator for Mount Hermon’s Summer Concert Series, I didn’t want to let COVID19 stop us from enjoying music from incredible artists this summer. Working with Mount Hermon’s leadership and the artists themselves, we’ve put together four Saturday online concerts. I know it’s not the same as being in beautiful Mount Hermon, but you won’t have to worry about travel or traffic. You can enjoy each concert from the comfort of your own home! We will be offering virtual concerts on four Saturdays in July, 7:00pm, through Mount Hermon’s YouTube Channel: Mount Hermon TV. We hope these will encourage you and your family.

The Unpredictability of Life

So much life has happened since my last eNewsletter both personally and in ministry. Some things are planned, but other things just happen and surprisingly change our course. Nothing has been too drastic, but it’s the uncertainty of life that keeps us on our toes and keeps us turning to Jesus. I love Proverbs 16:9 because no matter how organized we are in looking ahead, it’s the Lord who guides us and creates our path.

The Summer Concerts at Mount Hermon went really well. Heartfelt Music® is in charge of organizing these and is setting up the summer of 2020 now. July 28th Sherri and I celebrated our 35th Wedding Anniversary. What a joy! In August, I started teaching again at Valley Christian Schools with a new junior high class called Video Fun. We are creating all kinds of videos using an iPad and iMovie and it has truly been fun. I’ve been the Worship Arts Director with Gilroy Presbyterian Church for three years through Heartfelt Music®. They have skillful and enjoyable musicians and we’ve just starting another season of choir. I’ve been rebuilding a deck in our back yard, which has taking much longer than anticipated. Just recently, PG&E turned off our power for no reason and we had to do without internet and sleep apnea machines for a couple of days. Life is unpredictable, but God is in control! We experience His love and faithfulness every day.

Inspiring Summer Concerts

The Mount Hermon Summer Concert Series was a such a ministry success! We ended with Phil Keaggy, Aaron Shust, and Point of Grace in July. We are already working on next summer and have a phenomenal line up including Phillips, Craig, and Dean.

35th Wedding Anniversary

Sherri and I have been married for 35 years! Right after the Point of Grace concert in July, we took our boys and their wives to Shadowbrook restaurant to celebrate. It’s so fulfilling to reflect on all the wonderful experiences God has brought us through.

Teaching & Private Guitar Lessons

I’m continuing to teach full time at Valley Christian School as well as teach private guitar lessons. There are about 55 guitar students in the music program at VCS and I am mentoring about eight private students in Los Altos as well as Skype/FaceTime.

July Update

I hope you are having an enjoyable Fouth of July weekend! It’s been great for me to work on new songs for new albums, writing out music for new music books, and organize songs for a new video series called Songs & Techniques. I’ll explain more in August. Personally, Sherri and I have been designing a new deck off the back of our house. The old one is falling apart and we need to fix it by the end of the summer.

Producing the seven concerts at Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center is the biggest thing for me this summer. This Saturday, we’ll have Buddy Greene in concert at 7:30pm. Phil Keaggy in Concert

As a part of the Mount Hermon Summer Concert Series, Phil Keaggy will be in concert Saturday, July 13, at 7:30pm in the main auditorium at the Mount Hermon Conference Center (37 Conference Drive, Mount Hermon. CA 95041). Phil Keaggy is one of the best guitar players in the world and perhaps one of the most admired guitarists in music today. A master of both electric rock and acoustic finger style, he has been honing his craft for over 50 years. He continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changing style, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumental compositions. He won his very first Dove award in 1988 for his instrumental album, “The Wind and the Wheat. Phil’s second Dove Award came in 1992 for his Celtic-influenced, “Beyond Nature”. Phil has won the “Instrumental Record” category at the Doves for many years with sons like, “Acoustic Sketches” and “Lights of Madrid”.

Aaron Shust in Concert

Aaron Shust will be in concert Saturday, July 20, at 7:30pm in the main auditorium at the Mount Hermon Conference Center (37 Conference Drive, Mount Hermon. CA 95041). Over the past decade, Aaron Shust has earned a reputation as one of Christian music’s most compelling songwriters and a vocalist of considerable depth and passion. He was named both New Artist and Songwriter of the Year at the 2007 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and the impact of his song, “My Savior My God” was recognized with the Song of the Year honor. The summer wrapped up beautifully after 8 concerts at Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center. I’ll be the Concert Coordinator again next summer and have an amazing line-up: Sanctus Real (6/15), The King’s Brass (6/22), Fernando Ortega (6/29), Buddy Greene (7/6), Phil Keaggy (7/13), Aaron Shust (7/20), and Point of Grace (7/27). We just finished our first quarter at Valley Christian School and it is so fulfilling to train and mentor these students. My Music Technology class is producing a free concert Friday with singer/songwriter Anja Kotar and guitarist Dimitri Morris. You can hear her songs on Apple Music HERE. We just finished our Spiritual Emphasis week where the faculty went to Mount Hermon for a day of spiritual renewal and the student body spent four days with inspiring chapels. Our worship team this year has students and adults playing on the same team, which has really raised the bar. I’m having fun with my four guitar classes. There is even a guitar club during lunch that I am advising.

My oldest son, Brandon, got married in September to Kristin and went to Whales for their honeymoon. Now both of my boys are married and enjoying their new adventures with their spouses. Sherri and I are now empty-nesters with a 120-pound Bernese Mountain Dog…having fun!

I’m still the Worship Arts Director with Gilroy Presbyterian Church and President of the Community Group at Mount Hermon. Life is full, but I’m doing what I love. Lots of ministry, lots of relational interconnection, and lots of teaching/training.

Brandon & Kristin Are Married!

Brandon & Kristin had a wonderful wedding on September 20 in Berkeley. I was able to do the officiating and felt so honored to help tie the knot. They went to Whales for their honeymoon and are happily employed in great companies. Brandon is working at Facebook with concept design for 3D art with Oculus. Kristin is working with animation at Lucas Film. Needless to say, I’m very proud of them! Brandon continues to paint and draw on his own time.

Anja Kotar in Concert at VCS

Anja Kotar (professional vocal artist) will be performing with Dimitri Morris (professional guitarist) at Valley Christian High School in the Conservatory Hall this Friday, November 2, at 7:00pm. Both of them are Valley Christian alumni. My Music Technology class is putting on this concert to learn how to produce concerts. All the details can be found by clicking HERE. She will be sharing from her album called Nomad and having a Listening Party at 5:00pm.

I’m Selling My Taylor 815CE

I am selling my Taylor 815CE guitar. It’s been a beautiful one-of-a-kind instrument and is still in mint condition. It has unique inlay on the fretboard and the bridge and has ebony tuning keys.
