How often do you practice?

So, how often do you practice? I know of some musicians who practice 6 to 8 hours a day and others who practice 6 to 8 minutes a week. You would agree that practice makes better, right? Sometimes it’s not just about the time you put in, but the quality of what you practice. It’s good to go over exercises, songs and techniques until you get them accurate and at a good pace. Make it your aim to put in a little more time than you have been to practice. You’ll see the difference!
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a general practice scale based on how often you practice? Let me know what you think about the one below and how I can tweak it to be a helpful tool. On a scale from 1 to 5:
1 = Up to 1 hour a week or 10 minutes a day
2 = Up to 2 hours a week or 20 minutes a day
3 = Up to 3 hours a week or 30 minutes a day
4 = Up to 6 hours a week or 1 hour a day
5 = Over 6 hours a week or over 1 hour a day
What do you think?

To help players progress from 6 minutes a week to 10 minutes a day you might want the scale to start at 6 minutes a week. You could call it 0, but that may hurt my sensitive feelings. Maybe 1/2.

Darrell, I’m smiling as I read your comment. We could extend the scale to be 1-20 because a lot of students practice very little. The whole idea of the discussion is to encourage more practicing. However, on my scale of 1-5, a “1″ is “up to” 10 minutes a day. 6 minutes a week still fits in the “up to an hour a week.” Thanks for commenting.
